Ella

Being away from family is hard enough most days.  Knowing that birthdays come and go, traditional holidays like Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas pass on by from one year to the next.  But this is  much different, something harder yet.  Knowing that family is gathered to say goodbye and celebrate a life well lived.

We had the opportunity last fall to spend a little time with grandma.  We all knew that it was just a matter of time for her to go home to be with her Lord.  She has been ready for a long time.  Trapped in a decaying, broken down body yet with a sharp mind.   In fact, as we walked out of her home that chilly fall day, we blew kisses and said we'll see you again, knowing full well we meant heaven.

Going to grandmas always meant you were eating whether  you liked it or not.  Even if you had just come from a large meal or were on your way to one, it didn't matter.  She would pull out at no stops all the food in her refrigerator and set the table.  The food often was .. let's just say questionable.   You see grandma was very frugal.  She survived the great depression, saw wars come and go, came from a family of 18 children, and worked hard for what they earned.   Nothing and I mean nothing went to waste.   As the dishes of food passed on by she would encourage... i mean ..make you eat all the while she would sit back and just watch.  She would never eat herself.  I think that's why she stayed so tiny.

Tiny with a lot of fight... that was grandma.   I think she found pure enjoyment in serving and providing.   And she did just that.   As she lay,
dying in her last days, hours and moments, she was surrounded by her 7 children singing hymns as Jesus was waiting to take her by the hand into His kingdom.  Where the old will be made new!
